The principle of two weakness is an essential factor in winning most of the chess games. In a chess game, both sides try to create weaknesses in the opponent’s camp. This is mainly achieved with identifying weak squares. But creating one weakness is not only enough to win a game. If there are two weakness then it will be a match-winning advantage in most of the time.
The stronger side should attempt to create an attacking point. Then you should further play to gain the advantage of two weakness.
In the above diagram, both d5 and h5 pawns are under attack making black in a Zugzwang. White will win this game based on the principle of two weakness.
Prerequisite for the getting advantage of two weaknesses
If these advantages exist in the game then opponent not be able to effectively counter these advantage.
Applicability of the principle of two weakness
- It can be applied against vulnerable pawns.
- Backward pawn weakness
- Isolated pawn weakness etc.
- Any group of pawns depends on the situation.
- On an inactive piece.
- The weakness of rank or file.
- Pawn minority on a flank (to create remote passed pawn).
- Any other positional deficiency also can be targeted.
In the above position, white has two weaknesses. Black is lacking a pawn on the kingside and his queenside pawns also without protection. White king cannot deal with both weaknesses. When the white king tries to cover one weakness, then lack will attack for the other weakness. It can e achieved by sacrificing his remote passed pawns in order to penetrate with the king and capture the white pawns on c4 and b5.
The above position is somewhat similar to the previous diagram. But this position could not win for black.
The presence of only one weakness is not enough to win this game. With the pawn structure, black kings penetrating possibility has been cut off. Therefore white queenside is not weak anymore as it is not available for the black king.
The skill of spotting a possible second weakness and making it a real attacking object is very important for the chess player. The following instructive example will help to acquire these skills.
